Collecting background informationStarting with the getting the Breezecom equipment on monday I started to test the basic functionality. Having problems with connecting two PCs together, while connecting the AP to the network and the SA to a PC works perfectly. A look into the Ethernet Specification showed me, that I need a special crossed twisted pair cable. The Ethernete Howto did give me a advice how to modify a patch cable to a crossed cable. After this the connection worked perfectly.
Local TerminalThe service terminal is used to change settings like the IP address of the unit, which hopping sequence is used and trap signall sending. Also there is a survey menu, where counters of all ethernet packages and transmitted packegs are avaible. In this way it is easy possible to see if the unit receives the ethernet traffic and how much it actually transmitts to the wireless lan.Reading about possible cards with closer look on Linux compatibilityThe searches in the Web discovered the openh323 project, which has links to other H323 and VoIP projects. As well information about possible hardware could be found.Browsing the VoIP and openh323 newsgroups I saw in one of the newsgroups that actually a engineer of one of the companies is discussing and helping to get their product running. This means for me, that the service avaible to me, as a student and not a companies reprentative is better. Also the card can be ordered by phone or Internet for 160$. Altogether, also with concerning the support generally, I believe not buying a turn key solution would mean to do a lot of work on our own (e.g. gateway software & compatibality issues). The best support we can get is reviews of others, open discussions about problems and their solution. Of course Cisco, Lucent and 3com have this areas in their web side, but their products don t target end users. There for I would suggest to buy the Quicknet Phonejack. There are known issues with interfacing to Australian phone lines (at the Linejack product), but how the company dealt witht the matter was openly and not neglecting any facts. This means in reality they really try to help get their products running in different enviroments, than selling and forgetting. The place where we can buy the card is suggested on their web page as well. I would recommend to phone, ask whetever the cards are in stock and decide the same day. |
